Essay Sample on the Role of Women in Management
Essay Sample on the Role of Women in Management The Role of Women in Management Sep 13, 2019 in Management Introduction Over the last few years, women have invented considerable inroads into management jobs. However, most of the women are in the middle or lower management level, whereas few are in top management level. This vertical gender gap happens even among those women with elite education credentials. Based on a research study done by the U.S.A Census Bureau in the year 2010, women were less involved in management level because females acquire less education credentials than men do. Secondly, women accumulate less of the required experience. Thirdly, the cultural schema contributes largely to the difference of the roles women should have in the management level. The Current Position of Women in Management The research also showed that the American women have entered the management in an increasing number. The results exhibited that 13 percent of managers in the private sectors were women in the year 1945 as compared to 45 in the year 2010. Therefore, in the future the number of women managers in industries will increase. Again, women representation in management equaled women share of the civilian labor force, which was 46 percent. In current years, the percentage of female managers in the private sector reduced, dropping to 41 percent in 2010, although womens share of the civilian labor force increased to 47 percent. This long-term trend toward gender equality in management, displeasure as it is by the latest countertrend, is not seen at all lines of management. However, women remain disproportionately separated in lower levels of management. Again, they are scarcely represented at the top. Order now Live Chat Over the past 40 years, U.S women education achievements have outpaced those of men. According to National Center for Education Statistics, women earned 43 percent of bachelors degrees 1970-1971 whereas between the year 2008-2009 women earned more bachelors degrees. In the year 2010, women made up just 50 percent of the civilian workforce with college degrees. The research also showed that most U.S women have ventured in business. In spite of the fact that women have largely ventured in business, they do not have the required managerial skills as compared to men (Bertrand, 2010). The reason is that they are not in the fields that require mathematics, engineering, technology and the field of science. Therefore, this utmost obstacle is contributing to gender-segregation in management. Women underrepresentation in these fields has kept them out of pipeline to upper management. This is evident by the decreasing number of women who are doing STEM courses. Based on the evidence on National Science Foundation, i.e. in the year 2009, women constituted to 20 percent of the U.S STEM workforce. Moreover, education stratification in the U.S has contributed to gender segregation in management, i.e. women access to business education is stratified by institutional prestige. The research showed that only 31 percent of the MBA students in the top U.S business school are female compared to 45 percent across all MBA programs. The difference in terms of work experience has played a crucial role in gender-segregation where women managers have less authority as compared to men. According to a research study conducted by U.S Census Bureau, i.e. in the year 2011, women contributed to 34 percent of the U.S workforce as compared to 64 percent of men. Today, U.S women with children are working in the industries and companies for long hours. Again, the number of women has increased in the past few decades (Nguyen, 2008). Notwithstanding these trends towards gender equality, women tend to accumulate less of the work experience that is needed to get into management as compared to men. The reason is that people believe that women are going to cause a lot of interruption in their careers such as raising children. Therefore, these interruptions reduce the capability of a woman gaining more experience than men do. Next, cultural factor may also be one of the main factors contributing to disparities of jobs preference and work experience between men and women. Examples of the cultural schemas are that men are better than women in science and math. Secondly, women belong to home whereas men belong at work. Finally, the cultural schema shows that men are managers who have natural leadership qualities than women do (Spencer, 2009). These qualities have increasingly led to upper management jobs. Notwithstanding the truth that most people in the U.S have acknowledged the role of married women in management, still, some continue to believe that married women with children belong at home and not to work (Bianchi, 2011). A recent survey conducted by the U.S National Center for Education Statistics found out that mediums of 56 hours per week for male managers and 52 hour per week for female managers. Therefore, these suggest that female managers experience strong work and family conflict. .chat-now-banner { background: #ec5c63; position: relative; overflow: hidden; text-align: center; } .chat-now-banner::before { display: block; content: ''; position: absolute; left: -170px; right: 50%; top: 0; bottom: 0; background: #04b5af; transform: skewX(45deg); } .chat-now-banner table { position: relative; color: #ffffff; font-size: 16px; } .chat-now-banner .btn.btn-primary { background: #ffffff; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 36px; color: #ec5c63; box-shadow: none; border-radius: 6px 0 6px 0; padding-left: .75rem; padding-right: .75rem; } .chat-now-banner-problem, .chat-now-banner-solution span { position: relative; } .chat-now-banner-problem { padding-left: 50px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { padding-right: 50px; } .chat-now-banner-problem::before { content: url('/images/banners/chat-img1r.png'); display: inline-block; vertical-align: middle; position: absolute; left: 20px; top: 50%; transform: translateY(-50%); } .chat-now-banner-solution span::after { content: url('/images/banners/chat-img2.png'); display: inline-block; vertical-align: middle; position: absolute; left: 110% } .chat-now-banner-solution span { white-space: nowrap; } .chat-now-banner td { text-align: center; } @media all and (min-width: 1600px) { .chat-now-banner-solution div { display: inline; } .chat-now-banner .btn.btn-primary { margin-left: 15px; } } @media all and (max-width: 1599px) { .chat-now-banner-problem, .chat-now-banner-solution span { line-height: 1; } .chat-now-banner-problem { line-height: 35px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { line-height: 35px; } .chat-now-banner td { vertical-align: top; padding: 20px 5px 10px; } } @media all and (min-width: 1250px) and (max-width: 1599px) { .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: block; } } @media all and (max-width: 1249px) and (min-width: 993px) { .chat-now-banner .btn.btn-primary { margin-left: 0; } .chat-now-banner { height: auto; max-width: 480px; margin: 0 auto; background: linear-gradient(to right top, #ec5c63 0%, #ec5c63 50%, #04b5af 50%, #04b5af 100%) } .chat-now-banner::before { display: none; } .chat-now-banner-problem { padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-problem::before { left: -1px; top: 87%; transform: translateY(-50%); } .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: block; position: absolute; right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner td { display: block; } .chat-now-banner td:nth-child(2) { display: none; } .chat-now-banner td:last-child { padding-top: 13px; padding-bottom: 17px; } .chat-now-banner td:first-child { text-align: right; } .chat-now-banner-problem { display: inline-block; padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { width: 50%; } .chat-now-banner-problem { padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { padding: 0; } } @media all and (max-width: 992px) { .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: block; } } @media all and (max-width: 699px) { .chat-now-banner .btn.btn-primary { margin-left: 0; } .chat-now-banner { height: auto; max-width: 480px; margin: 0 auto; background: linear-gradient(to right top, #ec5c63 0%, #ec5c63 50%, #04b5af 50%, #04b5af 100%) } .chat-now-banner::before { display: none; } .chat-now-banner-problem { padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-problem::before { left: -1px; top: 87%; transform: translateY(-50%); } .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: block; position: absolute; right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner td { display: block; } .chat-now-banner td:nth-child(2) { display: none; } .chat-now-banner td:last-child { padding-top: 13px; padding-bottom: 17px; } .chat-now-banner td:first-child { text-align: right; } .chat-now-banner-problem { display: inline-block; padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { width: 50%; } .chat-now-banner-problem { padding-right: 15px; } .chat-now-banner-solution { padding: 0; } } @media all and (max-width: 519px) { .chat-now-banner-solution { width: 100%; } .chat-now-banner-problem { display: block; text-align: center; padding: 0; } .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: inline; position: static; } } @media all and (max-width: 459px) { .chat-now-banner::before { transform: skewX(55.1deg); left: 160px; } .chat-now-banner-problem::before { top: 50%; } .chat-now-banner-problem span { display: block; } } Need reliable and quick help with your paper? Connect us right now? Chat Now In the middle classes, from where most managers are drawn, there is an increasing cultural pressure on mothers to attend to their children by themselves. These mothers are forced to switch from managing bureaucracies to managing their children. Women in management normally get a lot of resistance from men who are her subordinates. Therefore, women experience a lot challenges in making sure that the business operations are running in the correct way. On the contrary, cultural practices have changed, and everyone in the U.S is expected to perform any job without questioning. The cultures of many industries in the U.S are discouraging the role of women in managerial positions. For example, financial industries are working in the 24-hour system. Therefore, they normally look for someone who can stay in management for a long period, unlike women who have to go home before time so that they can take care of their children. Although some women have the required education credentials, the cu lture of the company may disqualify them (Laura, 2008). Most of the U.S financial industries believe that women are slow in making a strategic decisions and implementing them. This is one of the reasons why women have fewer managerial position in industries. A study of female executives in finance showed that after women have children, their choices of career trajectories to pursue senior management position or stay at home and work part time are influenced by conflicting cultural schemas. Women have outnumbered men in emotional intelligence management. This statement shows that women should be given top rank managers because senior management jobs have a large symbolic component. Based on the U.S.A Bureau of Labor Statistics, women now account to a third of all managers. This research shows that women have remarkable implications for a firms competitiveness because of the potential benefit of gender diversity. The research also shows that women bring information and social diversity benefits to the top management. Female representation in the top management improves managerial task performance throughout the firm. It is evident from strategic management journal that women representation in the top management has a positive impact. Examples of such effects include bringing innovations to the firm thus improving its performance. A recent comprehensive survey showed the existing empirical work on the relationship between female representations at the top of the corporate hierarchy and firm performance. According to this journal, when women join a top management team, the team becomes more diverse. The team becomes diverse in terms of information and social categ orization. This positive factor facilitates the employment of women in management level because they encourage participation by soliciting input from others, share information and empower by keeping open communication channels with their subordinates Some people find women to be less hierarchical than men. Other people find women to be more collaborative and cooperative than men. Meta-analytic investigation shows that women are more democratic and participatory in the organization setting. Such managerial behaviors promote the sharing of task relevant information. Female workers have combined and established an organization that will cater for problems of women in management. For example, Women in Management are organizations that help to motivate ladies to enroll in education so that they can be capable of contributing to every sector of the globe (Burke, 2009). The organization encourages young women to enroll in colleges regardless of the cultural practices that are in place. Today, women in the universe are joining school. In the U.S.A, a large number of women have done business related masters degrees. Moreover, they have enrolled in engineering and financial courses that require a lot of mathematics (Penner, 2008). On the c ontrary, the number of female managers is constantly growing such that more women are lined up to take the restraint of 500 destined firms than ever before. IBM tapped Virginia Rometty to succeed Sam Palmisano, which will make her the first female C.E.O in the company. Many firms had male managers for decades, thus a masculine management pattern often the default style. Managers at this organization tend to encourage workers who pursue a sanction behavior, which is normally aggressive, direct, and unattached. Therefore, a woman, who does not practice that management style, could be stalled during her corporate climb. Recommendation and Conclusion A person would recommend that women should strive to achieve the required managerial skills so that they can be employed in monumental institution. Another recommendation is that women involved in management should entail all the required education, so that educational credentials cannot kick her out of the job. They should also contain the attribute required in all the management levels such as top management, middle management, and operational management, so that she can see the success of the firms operations. They should learn how to communicate with the firm stakeholders, i.e. should have adequate interpersonal skills among others. Another suggestion is that everyone should support women in the field of management. Again, more organizations activating for the equal rights in management should be established so that problems will be solved appropriately. Finally, the government should support the campaign against women elimination in the field of management (Schein, 2011). Once t hese recommendations are met, a large number of women will be involved in running organizations in the near future. In conclusion, the number of women in management is increasing rapidly in that they are managing successful firms, especially in the U.S.A. This paper shows and stipulates various challenges that women are facing in the field of management, their benefits in the field, and some recommendations among others.

Morality in the Hunt for Red October Essay - 1190 Words
Morality in The Hunt for Red October While hundreds, even thousands of excellent movies have been made over the years since motion pictures were invented, there are some movies that stand out among the best. There are various reasons for these standouts, sometimes incredible acting, sometimes impeccable story lines, but in many cases, it is the issues addressed by the movie. Modern Mythology Influence on the Society Free Essays
Modern mythology is characterized as that by which are considered to be beings far from those who inhabit the earthly component of what seemed to be typical in the view of humankind.à The influence of myths in the standpoints and views of individuals had been one of the initial bases of our ancestorsââ¬â¢ beliefs which are in a way creating a whole new dimension of their respective approaches in daily living (Bell, 1997). The broad landscape of myths had been sought to be traditionally passed on until the contemporary society of today, and as to how recent studies have stressed, the level of influence triggering the rationality of the masses had already been declining in some sort. We will write a custom essay sample on Modern Mythology: Influence on the Society or any similar topic only for you Order Now à Such argument raised on why myths, which used to be the towering implication of human rationality had increasingly changed and depleted had been answered in the arena of sociological innovative as well as with the transformational changes in human beings sagacity of liberalism. Catastrophic Event However, on the contrary of the proposition, one myth which I found to have been helpful, although factual data seem to mesmerize my stand is the Myth of the Gift of the Goddess, which caters an array of goddess-lined embodiment and correlating the goddess of fertility as that which conveys the essentiality of humanistic needs such as ââ¬Ësexââ¬â¢ and all the other forms of intimate relationships (Te Paske, 1982). Suppressing the realm of mythical, religious and cultural arena has been established to be that which serves as a symbol of the skills and capabilities of woman in performing its duties coherent with certain models, or what traditionalism presumed to be the representations of the kind of person any woman in the contemporary society incorporates. Freudian Doctrines In further illustration of the matter, shifting the scenario to Freudian doctrines, related with one of the mythical goddesses is Artemis, who is defined as the goddess who enjoys the gift of life and fertility or childbirth.à She is also known as the goddess of wilderness, thus given with such fact, it may be taken to assumption that women are capable of extracting and involving in ââ¬Ëintimateââ¬â¢ relationships and thus have beliefs which are taken consideration initially before they are to dwell upon it (Te Paske, 1982). Sexual Solipcism Freudââ¬â¢s belief in the art of ââ¬Ësexual solipcismââ¬â¢ which never fails to mystify the society of today, is a proof that the level of rationality of human beings today, compared to that of the past decades had evolved in a rather more open echelon on ââ¬Ëopennessââ¬â¢ (Bell, 1997).à Freud established this so-called numerological fantasy connected to menstrual cycle of the female species by which on the hard line feminist critique of psychoanalysis is conceived as the predictable reaction to numerous psychologically based primacy of the internal organ of the male (Bell, 1997) and in the larger and rather explicit scale of such portrays the fact that all men are rapists and oppressors and women are the victims pious in their innocence (Te Paske, 1982).à The issue is deliberatively raised on the worst and animus shadow of the whole gist of what seemed to be a fact among the perception on men, thus creating a dim image of the menââ¬â¢s purity in mind and deed (Te Paske, 1982). Life Changing Event Perceivably, the only problem established by myths is its capability to change gradually the behavior and the personality of an individual who was able to acquire it.à 21stà Century analogy and basis blatantly argues that myths create a negative impact on the society and thus must be given focus on to by behavioral analysts so as to fully eradicate the perception that myths are effectual ââ¬Ëguiding starsââ¬â¢ (Wolin, 1995) and must be followed and given consideration on to by an individual. Numerous interpretations in the arena of mythological succession had been crucially studied and determined by socio-political analysts.à With the objective to save the victims of false beliefs, they emerged in a form of research which indulges in transcendence and immanence to take a claim of the juxtaposition of modern and traditional conviction. Power of Myth The power of myth, according to mythologist Joseph Campbell and world renowned journalist Bill Moyers, myth is a sociological and at the same time a behavioral dynamic of individuality whereas enthusiasm of such somehow serve as a steer in decision making.à However, in his documentary show, he also stressed the negative effects of myths which denotes that the fallacious beliefs, taken from the word ââ¬Ëfallacyââ¬â¢ itself is in a ratio of 10:90 adequate in helping people know and understand their inner self (Nicholson, 1999). Abandoning Mythological Skepticism Moreover, the argument on myths had been prudently expounded the EM Risse, in his article, Shape the Future.à In his article, he contended that the problem of the society on why development is dawdling in motion is because of the citizenââ¬â¢s counterfeit confidence on traditional notions.à Advising the community to jump out of the skin of lifeââ¬â¢s conventionalities and start exploring the rather challenging schemes of the highly regarded components of human settlement patterns (Bell, 1997). Relic What I have cited as an instance where the myth had been believed to be true to fact, is the dispute of a suspect in a rape case, wherein the bark of defenses of the offender laid a table of mythological explanations, which of course, had not been accepted by the court.à A perfect representation and actuality that modern world justice system and form of regulation on justifications of individuals are well studied and are not in point of fact based on that which is falling on the stream of false beliefs and other traditional saga eaten by criminals to escape from the bars of justice. The mere fact that there were still individuals who believe in the power of myth, it had been cited that the aforementioned kind take the risk of following the potent nature of myths and thus believe that their salvation or their scheme in life is already written in a book and thus cannot be changed (Nicholson, 1999). Reality versus Idealism Furthermore, I would barely like to support the argument on such statement.à Basing the idea on ââ¬Ërealityââ¬â¢ versus ââ¬Ëidealismââ¬â¢ will unfold the life living in myths as well as the twists and turns one may divulge in it (Wolin, 1995). Perhaps it may not be as sufficient as that if the scientific explanations rendered by critical research and studies, but for people who were not able to experience the privilege of knowledge and of literacy do not have any other outlet and sense of support to dwell on. Rather, what myths tend to offer already gives air to their living and thus making the people able to perform what is expected by the community or the culture that they inhabit, regardless the quintessence of universality or societal acceptance. Conclusion In the light, what used to be the ââ¬Ëbibleââ¬â¢ of the medieval individualsââ¬â¢ daily basis has transformed in a rather conceptual and modernized state that such myths instilled by our forefathers had been locked in the jar of the times of yore.à The advent of mythological representations was noted to be either that of which is invented, or which had freely flown into place due to gossip (Bell, 1997; Wolin, 1995).à For the reason that humans are prone to interacting with the like is quite inevitable to take to assumption that the sufficiency and factuality of myths are deliberately hanging thoughts or perspectives. Every person has a certain point of enthusiasm in mythology in them (Wolin, 1995).à It may not be as obvious as one may seem to show the society or the people he or she is involved to, but the inevitability of the ââ¬Ëvain thoughtsââ¬â¢ within oneself is already a subconscious mythical ocean (Bell, 1997).à If one tends to believe that death will take him tomorrow, or that one will see his ââ¬Ëloved oneââ¬â¢ after an hour because a red Volkswagen passed by, those are already proofs that the existence of myth and its influence to people has not yet abandoned the modern limelight.à In conclusion, the never ending debates on how true or how sufficient myths are in explaining the phenomena occurring in this earthly place shall always be a part of every humanââ¬â¢s query in life.à How people think and act today, may be a manifestation of what one has been before; and how they are today may affect the myth of their future (Nicholson, 1999). The wild west meets the wild east Essay Example For Students
The wild west meets the wild east Essay Built on scenic, typhoon-lashed hills at the tip of a peninsula jutting into the Sea of Japan, Vladivostok was never a typical Soviet city. Home port of the Red Navys Pacific Fleet, it was closed even to Soviets from other regions until its official opening Jan. 1, 1992; yet because of the thousands of wandering merchant marine officers and seamen, more of Vladivostoks residents had probably visited Western countries than those of any other city in the empire. Today, however, the once-disciplined sailors have turned Al Capone-style businessmen, chasing after money and power in right-hand-drive cars imported from Japan. Ten company members from San Diegos Blackfriars Theatre rode into Russias new Wild East late last summer as the first American performing arts group ever to visit far eastern Russia with Beth Henleys fierce comedy of American pioneer life, Abundance, and Romulus Linneys moving one-act about the great Russian poet, Akhmatova. In addition to Vladivostok, the plays also toured last summer to Khabarovsk, a city on the Chinese border, with Abundances Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright along for the ride. Though by economic measures the cities are comparable to Tijuana, this is still the land that produced Chekhov and Stanislavsky, where even philistine borderline businessmen consider theatre a central part of cultural life. In fact, most of both the host theatres sponsors belong to this new-monied set. The Americans got a long look at a distinct theatrical culture which with the self-assured signals of U.S. culture jamming the post Cold War airwaves, and increasingly desperate financial pressures on Russian artists runs the risk of being consigned to the proverbial dustbin. THIS TOUR REUNITED the cast of Blackfriars critically acclaimed 1991 production of Abundance, led by actor and producer Allison Brennan and director Ralph Elias. In Vladivostok and Khabarovsk these typically peripatetic American theatre professionals had a close encounter with the power of the Russian collective. Actor Kim Bennett explained: The lead actor of the Khabarovsk Youth Theatre asked me how many theatres Id worked in and I told him between 60 and 70 over the past 15 years. He had worked in his theatre for 20 years, and had never worked with any other. Its like playing on a team its not all about individual stars. Company member Erin Kelly cited the security of the collective as a key to the unrestrained theatricality of Russian acting. I think in the United States we need to get some of that largeness back into theatre. In America were too often limited by appropriateness and believability, she said. Actor Linda Libby suggested that the Russian acting style corresponds to their largeness of spirit in all areas of life. Allison Brennan played the title role in Akhmatova, which she says the company approached with some trepidation as to whether it was presumptuous of us to perform a play about a great Russian poet there. The company also worried that the one-act was too short to appear on its own program, and supplemented the evening with a reading by Russian actresses of Akhmatovas poem Requiem and a discussion period with audiences. But despite these qualms Brennan says the Linney one-act was received warmly and produced a huge impact on Russian audiences, especially given that the one-act was only added to the program in May, on the suggestion of a Vladivostok theatre manager who was concerned that Abundance alone wouldnt fill enough seats (a fear which proved unfounded: the company filled the large 1,000-seat theatre to capacity for each Abundance performance there, and the four Akhmatova performances in a smaller venue sold out before the Americans arrived). .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .postImageUrl , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:hover , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:visited , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:active { border:0!important; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:active , .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4 .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue48d35fa820936b43ed5c061a5470ac4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The 'how' of funny EssayTHE AMERICAN COMPANY was also astonished at the technical differences in the theatres they visited. There are no stage managers as we know them in Russian theatres: the technicians attend rehearsals and learn their parts the same way the actors do. In Vladivostok, the company faced the forbidding task of teching the show in a day and a half, with two technicians who spoke no English and had to run the lights from a 200-dimmer board, with each light on an individual dimmer. For Elias careful coordination of the lighting and sound were extremely important for the episodic Abundance and, he says, the results were impressive. The collaboration with the technicians was amazing, he recalls, and bonds developed between the two companies.
